Students in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (LLC) examine multifaceted global social, cultural, and ethical issues through literature, the visual arts, and popular media. Majors and minors in our seven programs (Arabic Studies, Chinese Studies, French, German Studies, Italian Studies, Japanese, Russian Studies) acquire skills in cultural analysis, critical thinking, and persuasive writing, as well as knowledge of key areas of the world. As a result, they are well-equipped to succeed in today’s economy, where employers value people who can think creatively and communicate in situations that are ambiguous, complex, and have a global impact. In addition to the seven languages supported by faculty expertise, students may also use the self-directed language acquisition program available in the Global Studio to learn languages such as Hindi, Korean, Dutch, Persian (Farsi/Dari), modern Hebrew, Turkish, and Swedish. They can also learn Swahili through the mentored self-instruction program.
Your support provides invaluable resources so that our students can engage in hands-on learning experiences that expand their understanding of the world and help them to recognize their own potential.
